Newgate Farm sold Wandjina colt Mamaragan ran the race of his life at Rosehill on Saturday finishing third at only his second start in the $3.5 million ATC Golden Slipper, the world’s richest race for two year-olds.
Prepared by John Thompson, Mamaragan won the Group II ATC Skyline Stakes on debut and then covered himself in glory with a top class effort to finish third in the Golden Slipper behind Farnan and Away Game beaten less than three lengths.
His rider Nash Rawiller was delighted with the performance.
“Great effort,” he said.
“He was a little bit slow away but he got straight into a good rhythm. I just think he’s a horse going forward that is really going to go somewhere. I think what he’s been able to achieve at just his second start is a phenomenal effort.”
A $180,000 Magic Millions purchase for his trainer from the Newgate Farm draft, Mamaragan runs for a big syndicate of owners including Wilf Mula’s Aston Bloodstock, who bred the colt.
Mamaragan is the third winner from Forbidden, a winning half-sister by General Nediym to Group II winner Son of Maher and stakes-winner Dance with Her.
Forbidden has a weanling filly by Foxwedge and was covered last spring by Flying Artie, who raced in the same colours as Mamaragan.
