Newgate’s Deep Field added a second Group I winner to his tally at the big international meeting at Sha Tin on Sunday when his brilliant sprinter Sky Field won the Group I HK International Sprint (1200m).
Tragedy marred the running of the prestigious sprint with a nasty fall taking out several key runners.
Coming around the home turn, Amazing Star broke down and brought down Japanese contender Pixie Knight as well as Aussie bred speedsters Lucky Patch and Naboo Attack.
Blake Shinn was able to miss the carnage and guided Sky Field from second last to defeat the Japanese mare Resistencia by three-quarters of a length.
It was a career defining victory for the Caspar Fownes trained Sky Field whose previous biggest win came in the Group III Premier Cup Handicap (1400m).
“All credit to Caspar Fownes, he’s given me the opportunity to ride this lovely animal over the previous season and this season,” Shinn said.
“We’ve always had faith in him but on the big stage things haven’t always gone this way. Today, he performed to his best and still beat a handy horse in chasing down a top-line horse in Courier Wonder and the Japanese horse.
“He’s a great horse and hopefully he can keep going forward.”
A $175,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from the Trelawney Stud draft for Mr D Kwan, Sky Field has the overall record of six wins and seven placings from 18 starts.
Bred by Mike Ryan, Sky Field was foaled and raised at Segenhoe and is the fifth winner from Laravissante, a half-sister by O’Reilly to Hong Kong Group I winner The Duke.
Sky Field has been a great flagbearer for Deep Field in Hong Kong where he is highly regarded having sired 14 winners.
