Newgate’s Russian Revolution has been generating a lot of activity on the barrier trial front over the past month so expect to see a flurry of winners from him as the back end of the season unfolds with Tsarina Sophia adding her name to his tally of winners on Tuesday at Kembla.
Trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, Tsarina Sophia had one previous trial for a third placing last month at Warwick Farm and was expected to run well.
She showed great determination to run down race favourite Vinnie’s Spirit and win the 1000m maiden by a short head on a heavy 10.
Tsarina Sophia was retained to race by her breeder Bill Ouston and is the third winner from stakes-placed Precious Sophia, a half-sister to stakes-winner the Travelling Man f rom the family of Group II winner Glory Girl.
She is the ninth first crop winner for Russian Revolution, who is the leading first season sire by earnings and winners with the brilliant Group I winning son of Snitzel earning a fee increase this season to stand at $71,500 including GST.
There is sure to be tremendous interest from pinhookers in the Russian Revolution draft of 17 for the Inglis Weanling Sale starting on Wednesday.
