The Newgate Consignment of mares offered at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale this week were the cream of the crop with Newgate finishing as leading vendor by aggregate selling 50 mares for $24million and change.
Newgate sold five of the 18 mares that fetched $1million or more including the two highest priced mares of the sale in Away Game for $4million and Tofane for $3.1million.
Co-consigned by Newgate with Hannah Jennings’ Killora Stud, the Champion 2YO Filly and $3.7million earner was bought by Yulong as the Written Tycoon Syndicate and they also secured Tofane.
By champion sire Snitzel, Away Game is a full sister to stakes-winner Modern Wonder and was bought as a yearling from the Mill Park draft at Magic Millions in 2019 for $425,000 by Kerri Radcliffe Bloodstock.
Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Away Game was an immediate success winning the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and placing in the Golden Slipper before returning at three and four to achieve further success with Group I placings in the MRC Oakleigh Plate and SAJC Robert Sangster Stakes.
She has never won a Group I, but gets her chance this Saturday in the Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm run at WFA.
“She’s obviously a fantastic racemare,” said Yulong’s Sam Fairgray.
“She’s a beautiful looking specimen.”
“We are really pleased to take her home. She’ll have a couple more starts and then have a date with Written Tycoon.”
“If she leaves progeny looking like herself she will definitely do well in the sales ring with her progeny.”
Offered by Newgate on behalf of Ballymore Stables, Tofane will ultimately find herself in a paddock next to Away Game in the future.
A $3.6million earning sprinter miler by Ocean Park, whose feature wins were the Group I ATC All Aged Stakes, BRC Stradbroke Handicap, MRC CF Orr Stakes and Tattersalls Tiara, Tofane also ticks the pedigree box.
She is a half-sister to Group III winning stayer No Compromise and this season’s quality 3YO Benaud runner-up in the Group I ATC Australian Derby.
Her dam Baggy Green is by legendary sire Galileo and a half-sister to Group I winning mares Funstar and Youngstar, who are both now at stud in Japan. Funstar was bought by Katsumi Yoshida last year for $2.7million through Inglis Digital and Youngstar was bought from the Inglis Chairman’s Sale the year before by Yoshida for $1.4million.
“She’s a lovely mare,” Fairgray said of Tofane. “Just a fantastic racemare. She was on the Yulong slot in The Everest – Mr Zhang has liked her for a few years.
“To get a quality mare like Tofane isn’t easy. To be able to buy her is fantastic.
“I would say Written Tycoon would be high up on the cards for her. After the sale we will sit down and look – we might even give her a couple of runs during the spring.”
