Newgate Farm/ China Horse Club and partners had good reason for celebration on Saturday after outstanding colt Militarize captured the $1million Group I ATC Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill, while progressive undefeated colt Ozzmosis won the ATC Listed ATC Heritage Stakes (1100m) earlier in the day.
A dominant winner of the Group I ATC Sires Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes last season, the Chris Waller trained Militarize was a fast finishing fifth in his seasonal return in the Group II ATC Run to the Rose and was fitted with blinkers for this assignment.
Ridden by Joao Moreira, who partnered the son of Dundeel in his previous Group I wins, Militarize overcame a chequered passage in the straight to swoop late and snatch victory over Capitalist gelding Encap.
“If he hadn’t done enough already (to make a stallion), he certainly has today,” Chris Waller said.
“It was a classic Golden Rose, good field. I guess we had a nice favourable draw, confident jockey, and I always thought the 1400m would be a bit short.
“We chose to put the blinkers on, which I don’t like doing too early in a horse’s career, but it might’ve just got us home.
“Everything worked out well. A bit of traffic in the straight, but he’s an amazing jockey. We certainly will be talking about a Caulfield Guineas for sure; that looks a nice race for him in terms of a traditional set-up.”
Militarize was a $550,000 Magic Millions purchase for China Horse Club/Newgate Bloodstock/Trilogy Racing from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft and has won four of seven starts earning $1.7million.
A son of champion sire Zoustar, Ozzmosis is the colt on the rise claiming his first stakes win in the Listed ATC Heritage stakes at his first run back from a spell taking his overall record to three wins from three starts.
Newgate and partners bought into Ozzmosis after his first two wins and the Bjorn Baker trained colt looks set for a great spring campaign.
“He had to do it the hard way and sit outside the leader,” said Bjorn Baker.
“I thought he was very strong to keep kicking. He’s got a great attitude and is a pleasure to train.”
The Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) has always been the aim for Ozzmosis this spring, but with a couple of slots still to be filled for the $20million Everest connections may have a few options to ponder. Bjorn Baker and Darby Racing already have five year-old gelding Overpass into the Everest and his younger stablemate Ozzmosis would be an interesting addition to the mix.
