Deep Field added a new stakes-winner to his tally on Sunday when highly talented Karaka graduate Cheers Brothers stepped up to stakes level in style with a stunning victory in the M$2.3m Treasure Island Resorts World Macau Derby (1800m).
Raced by renowned TV personality Eric Tsang Chi Wai, five year-old gelding Cheers Brothers is trained by Joe Lau and was ridden to Sunday’s Derby triumph by Eric Cheung.
Taken back in the early stages after jumping from the outside gate, Cheers Brothers was a clear last for most of the race before swooping around the outside of the big field coming up to the home turn.
But his ominous run nearly came to a dramatic end at the top of the home straight when he stumbled badly and almost fell to the turf.
Cheers Brothers somehow stayed upright, regathered his balance and then sprinted again, charging to the lead to score a sensational one-length win.
Bought for $150,000 from the Book 1 draft of Kilgravin Lodge at Karaka 2019, Cheers Brothers was also a pinhook winner having been purchased for $52,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale by Kilgravin Lodge from the Rosemont Stud draft.
He has now had 11 starts for six wins, one placing and M$815,750 in stakes.
Cheers Brothers is the 15th stakes-winner for Deep Field and he is the best of three winners from Red Ransom (USA) mare Balmoral Baby, who comes from the family of Group I placed stakes-winner Upstaged.
