The Group I ATC Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday was won by high class Snitzel filly Lady Shenandoah, but chasing her home in second place was another exciting filly on the up in Harlem Queen, a daughter of Newgate’s promising young sire Brutal.
The Nathan Doyle trained Harlem Queen had won her previous two starts at Newcastle and Kembla in good fashion and took the quantum leap to G1 company in her stride.
She settled back in the field for Sam Clipperton and hit the line hard to grab second some three lengths astern of Lady Shenandoah taking her record to two wins and two placings from five starts with prizemoney topping $215,000.
“Super run. Couldn’t be more proud of her,” said Sam Clipperton.
“The winner dropped her on sprinting, but she relished the mile and will relish perhaps even 2000m and beyond. Really nice filly going forward.”
A $180,000 Magic Millions purchase for Calibre Racing Group from the Newgate Farm draft, Harlem Queen was bred by SF Bloodstock in partnership and is a half-sister to stakes-placed Lady Harlem being the fifth winner from five foals to race from stakes-winning Fastnet Rock mare Harlem River.
Harlem River produced a filly by Capitalist last spring and is due to foal to State of Rest (IRE).
Winner of the Group I ATC Doncaster Handicap at three, Brutal is poised to make a big impact this season as his progeny mature and stands at the reduced fee of $16,500.
