The Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes is on the agenda for exciting Capitalist colt Sebonack, who made a sensational debut at Caulfield on Saturday to win the Group III MRC Chairman’s Stakes (1000m).
Carrying the Spendthrift Farm silks, the Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained colt was a third consecutive winner on the day for Jye McNeil.
Given the run of the race from an inside barrier, Sebonack defeated the Sebring filly Nanagui by one and a quarter lengths with another Capitalist filly Kiko a half-length back in third.
Wayne Hawkes said Sebonack was the benchmark for the stables two-year-olds.
“It was good to get that one out of the road. Now I know where the rest of them sit, and I’m not telling you if you ask me,” Hawkes said.
“It was a good level to see where some of our others are. We’ve got a few lined up over the next couple of weeks, and I’m happy.
“His first jump out was pretty impressive.
“He trialed up enormous, and he did everything right and got here today and did everything beautifully well.
“You never quite know with them when they’re at home, and then you come to race day and parade them. I was impressed the way he paraded and looked so well. He got the job done.”
The Blue Diamond is a possibility for Sebonack, although Hawkes was not fully committed.
“We will go home and see how he pulls up. It was a great effort and well done to all the connections,” he said.
“This was a 1000 metre race around Caulfield and the Blue Diamond in 1200. There’ll be a full field and about ten times the pressure of today.
“There’s a little bit to go yet, but winners are grinners and we’re happy.”
Purchased by Spendthrift Australia for $260,000 from the Sledmere Stud draft at the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Sebonack is the first winner for the Morphettville winner Profound Wisdom.
Profound Wisdom is a half-sister to Group II STC Skyline Stakes-winner Santos and the Japanese Group III winner Melagrana from the family of Emirates Park Stud’s wonderful mare Elated Lady.
Sebonack becomes the fifth stakes-winner for Newgate’s Capitalist, who is the leading Australian second crop sire by earnings and winners.
