Newgate Farm’s Deep Field is working towards a record number of individual Australian winners for a second crop sire and featured in South Africa on Thursday when his two year-old colt Al Muthaana scored a brilliant debut victory at Turffontein.
Trained by Mike de Kock for Shadwell, he opened up to win the 1160m juvenile maiden by a commanding four lengths.
A homebred for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, that was foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, Al Muthana is a half-brother to Group II winner Wawail and is the fifth winner from six to race from Group II winning Redoute’s Choice mare El Daana.
A $900,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Shadwell back in 2006, El Daana has a yearling filly by I Am Invincible, a weanling filly by Astern and is in foal to Wawail’s sire Lonhro.
Al Muthana is the first South African winner for Deep Field, who stands at a fee of $55,000 this spring.
