Magic Millions race day at the Gold Coast on Saturday provided so many reasons for celebration at Newgate!
The first race on the card, the $250,000 Magic Millions Maiden (1200m) was won by four year-old Hinchinbrook mare Warmth, who is trained by the Snowden’s and raced by Newgate in partnership with our good friends Nick Vass and Stonestreet Stables in whose colours she runs.
A $525,000 purchase for Stonestreet Stables/Newgate Bloodstock from the Luskin Park draft in 2019, this half-sister to stakes-winners Sprightly Lass and Le Cordon Bleu can be winning more races now she has broken the ice.
Champion trainer Chris Waller won the following race, the $250,000 Magic Millions Quality (1800m) with five year-old Dissident gelding Bigboyroy, who was bought from our Magic Millions draft in 2018 by Mulcaster Bloodstock for $120,000.
A super consistent gelding that has won five races and placed 17 times from 29 starts, he has been a gem for his owners and banked over $585,000 in prizemoney.
It was nearly a race to race double for Newgate sold graduates with another Dissident gelding Outlandosfinishing second to Navy Cross in the $1million Magic Millions Subzero (2400m). Trained by John Sargent, Outlandos has won over $300,000 in prizemoney.
Deep Field has had a memorable week in the sale ring with his first million dollar yearling and he also made his mark at the races with his star mare Isotope resuming from a long lay off following colic surgery to win the $1million Magic Millions Snippets (1200m).
Her trainer Tony Gollan was emotion after the win, declaring it was one of the most satisfying moments of his training career.
“Fresh-up from colic surgery, 32 weeks or more weeks between runs and she’s done an amazing job,” Gollan said.
“We had to ride her aggressively to get across from our barrier but she’s just such a good horse.
“She’s so special to our stable and all the connections.
“She does have a habit of being a bit tardy out of the gates and if she did that today it was going to make it a really tough ride for Ryan (Maloney) but once she stepped out of the gates, she broke best of anything, the plan was to be really aggressive on her.
“We’ve ridden some highs with her and then the lows like Magic Millions day last year.
“Things started to get back on track in Sydney and then she nearly died on us so to have her back here today is a little bit of justice for last year.
“You’ll see her in Sydney in the autumn, I can’t wait to take her away again.
“She can do anything in this next year.”
With six wins and three seconds from 11 starts and $1.3 million in prizemoney the best is still to come from this flying four year-old.
And so to the $2million Magic Millions 2YO Classic and while Russian Revolution’s bonny filly Russian Conquest couldn’t quite overhaul hot favourite Coolangatta, she did cover herself in glory with a brave long head second.
Bred by SF Bloodstock in partnership and foaled and raised at Newgate, she was the equal highest first crop yearling for her sire when fetching $425,000 to the bid of Snowden Racing last year and we liked her so much we retained a share.
She has now won $529,000 in prizemoney and put Russian Revolution at the top of the Australian First Season Sires List by earnings.
Newgate also had a keen interest in the outcome of the $2million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas having purchased the winner King of Sparta in partnership with China Horse Club and Starlight Racing for $700,000 as a yearling from the Yarraman Park draft with the long term view of stallion potential.
King of Sparta always showed outstanding ability, but when Peter and Paul Snowden recommended for the I Am Invincible colt to be gelded so he could fulfil his potential we elected to sell out our share to Yarraman and their partners, so while we are no longer in his ownership, we were happy to cheer him to victory!
