Newgate Farm’s young gun Capitalist has had his fee increased from $44,000 to $99,000 on the back of his stunning first crop racetrack results with his weanlings in hot demand at the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale on Thursday highlighted by a colt from Laylia that made $400,000 on Thursday to top the sale.
Consigned by Middlebrook Valley Lodge, the half-brother to Group III winner Shamalia and stakes-winner Emperors Way was bought by Gall Bloodstock/ Peter Morgan.
Bred by Victorian breeder David Digney, the star colt is the seventh foal from terrific producing Redoute’s Choice mare Laylia, who has had four winners from five runners.
Laylia was extremely well bought for $65,000 by Jaquers Investments from the Newgate Consignment at the 2020 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale when in foal to Capitalist with this $400,000 colt the result of that mating.
“$65,000 into $400,000 in a year, it’s pretty good. It’s not bad this breeding game!’’ an elated Digney told Inglis.
“It’s such a great result. We purchased the mare online last year, sight unseen as a 17YO but when she arrived here to us at Lemrac Lodge, which Megan Kirsopp-Cole manages and does such a fabulous job, you’d swear the mare was 10, she was sprightly and such a beautiful type that Newgate had looked after so well.
“[Inglis bloodstock consultant] Will Stott was instrumental in the purchase, he’s been guiding me so this result, it’s just fantastic.
“We knew we had a good product and Capitalist is very hot at the moment, and then when we found out the horse had 23 X-Ray hits, I knew plenty of people were interested in him. We put a $200,000 reserve on him because we just wanted to get him on the market and let the market sort the rest out so to get double the reserve, we were always hopeful of a result like this but until it happens, I guess you never really know.’’
Newgate sold the current yearling colt from Laylia, a colt by Flying Artie, at Magic Millions this year for $180,000 to the Racing League.
Capitalist had an outstanding sale with 10 weanlings selling at an average $147,500 with other great results a colt from Keeping Score (NZ) that made $260,000 for Fairhill Farm when bought by Tony Fung Investments, a colt from Malakiya that made $190,000 for Tamac Stud Farm when bought by Binalong Bloodstock, who also signed for a colt from One More Tequila that made $180,000 for Fairhill Farm.
