The Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale in Melbourne this week produced more great results for our exciting young sire Capitalist,  who was the leading sire by average with three weanlings averaging $145,000.

His top seller came on Monday with a colt from Sebrina fetching $250,000 for Widden Stud when bought by astute pinhooking partnership Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA) / Silverdale Farm.

Bred by Jock and Jennifer Mackay of Cangon Stud Farm, he is the third foal of Group III placed Sebring mare Sebrina, a daughter of Group III winner Crown Princess.

“He’s a lovely horse, extremely athletic, a beautiful moving horse, well put together,’’ Suman Hedge said.

“Overall as a buyer I’ve found it very hard here at Great Southern. It’s a buoyant market, there’s a lot of competition and if you come away with one or two of your targets, you’re rapt. We’ve only got one weanling and have missed out on quite a few.’’

Widden Stud were thrilled with the result.

“Being the first sale as the new brand in Victoria we wanted to make sure we sold well and to have a horse make $250,000 at Great Southern is just awesome,’’ Widden Victoria’s Phil Marshall said.

“This colt was a horse that really stood out in what is a really strong sale.

“He was popular from day one, he had a heap of X-Ray hits, heaps of double and triple inspections so we knew fairly early on he was going to be in the top five per cent of the sale. All the big guys here were on him.’’

Deep Field had the second highest average of all sires at this sale with five weanlings averaging $125,000.
